History of Bio-Save

History of Bio-Save®

In 1989, a small, biocontrol company, EcoScience, was formed by a scientist from the University of Massachusetts. EcoScience researched and discovered many biocontrol agents, the most successful of these was Bio-Save® which was developed in the early 1990’s by a group of distinguished scientists who modeled their work after USDA scientist, Wojciech Janisiewicz.

The most effective use of Bio-Save® was determined to be as a post-harvest, biocontrol agent because of the ability to control indoor applications. Extreme outdoor conditions make it almost impossible for biocontrol agents to be as effective. Between 1993 and 1996, extensive fieldwork (trials, studies and research) was done with two similar strains of pseudomonas syringae and both were chosen for very specific fruit and vegetables post-harvest applications for disease and decay control.

In 1996, EcoScience received their US patents and EPA registrations for Bio-Save. Sales of Bio-Save were minimal through 2000 because of shelf life limitations until 2001, when EcoScience registered a freeze-dried product, which made for easier field use. Sales began to grow substantially.

JET Harvest Solutions acquired the Bio-Save® technology in 2004.
